Teaching a second or third language requires a lot of capabilities on the teacher’s side. First of all, you have to find out, what kind of teaching personality you are and why you want to teach pupils.

As you have always been a certain learner type yourself, you might have an inclination to teaching as you would like to be taught. This surely is part of yourself but you have to meet the needs of different learner types in a classroom. As a consequence, you will have to adapt your teaching methods to the group of learners in front of you. Make a list of learner types in your classroom (see above in my blog: learner types).

Next, you will have to find out why you feel like teaching students. You are not only expected to teach grammar and vocabulary, but you are also supposed to teach insights into other cultures and ways of thinking. Students will notice immediately if you live the language and culture you teach or if you consider your teaching activities as a way to earn your living in the first place. Some language teachers avoid regular contact with native speakers and their countries thus losing the capability of being a shining representative of the new language and culture. Your own language skills will also deteriorate. In that case, you will not be satisfied with your job in the long run and your students will lose interest in teaching a „foreign“ culture.

Das Lehren einer anderen Sprache verlangt dem Lehrenden einiges ab. Zunächst sollte die Lehrkraft herausfinden, welcher Lernertyp sie selbst ist und weshalb sie Schülern eine andere Sprache vermitteln will.

Da die Lehrperson selbst ein bestimmter Lernertyp ist, besteht die Neigung, den Unterricht so zu gestalten, wie man selbst gern unterrichtet werden möchte. Dies ist natürlich ein wesentliches Merkmal, aber die Lehrkraft darf die verschiedenen Lernertypen im Klassensaal nicht vernachlässigen. daher muss sich die Lehrperson verschiedene Methoden des Unterrichtens aneignen. Erstelle also zuerst eine Übersicht über die verschiedenen Lernertypen in der Klasse, die du unterrichtest. (siehe im Blog weiter oben: Lernertypen).

Finde sodann heraus, weshalb du Schülern eine neue Sprache vermitteln willst. Es geht nicht nur darum, dass du Grammatik und Vokabeln vermittelst, sondern du musst deinen Schülern Einblicke in eine weitgehend unbekannte Kultur und Denkweise vermitteln. Schüler merken sofort, ob du die Kultur und Sprache selbst lebst oder ob du deinen Lehrauftrag vorwiegend als berufliche Erwerbstätigkeit siehst. Manche Fremdsprachenlehrer neigen dazu, regelmäßigen Kontakt zu Muttersprachlern und zur Kultur des Landes der Zielsprache zu vermeiden. Auf diese Weise läuft man als Lehrkraft Gefahr, die Eigenschaft als Vorbild für die neue Sprache und Kultur zu verlieren. Außerdem bleibt man selbst auf Dauer nicht mehr auf dem neuesten Stand. So wird die Lehrperson langfristig selbst die Freude am Unterrichten verlieren.
